RETURN

Entrance
TRAY RETURN POINT, TRAY RETURN WINDOW,
TRAY RETURN STATION, TRAY RETURN AREA

「BOOK DROP」

What terms are most appropriate the post for return in Tsutaya? In Japanese, it's called "返却box" and my best guess is a "return post" in English.

Thank you for your interesting question. Usually we say "Return Slot" in the case of a DVD rental store like Tsutaya.
By the way,「ポスト」is Japanese-English for "mailbox" (US English) or
"post box" (British English.
ポスト投入口 is "mailbox slot" or "post box slot".

Dear YY. Here are a couple of Googled sentences using "return slot" and "video return slot".
"A 21-year-old Los Angeles man was charged with placing a pipe bomb in the return slot of a South Los Angeles Blockbuster video store that exploded Tuesday."
"However if a video is due back on Sunday, it must be returned through the video return slot by 9:00 am Monday, to avoid an overdue charge."

Thank you for your comments. The "slot" makes me feel the particular part in the post box for returning DVDs. Dot the slot also mean the post box itself? One of your examples used a preposition, "through" before the slot, implying the part of the post box, although the first one suggests the box.

We only use the word "mailbox" or "post box" for boxes that contain mail (郵便物) If the 返却口 is in the wall and the recepticle into which the returned video will fall cannot be seen, "(video) return slot would be approprirate". If there is a separate, free standing recepticle (box) that is not part of the wall, "(video) return terminal" or "(video) return box" may be used. We can't call it a "post box" in English, because we put videos in it, not mail.

I found this example of "video return box" which is a box that is separate from, and outside the building". (If it built into the wall of the building "return slot" is best)

"Officer dispatched to an arson complaint found a flammable object had been placed into the video return box which is outside of the building."

I found "video cassette return"
as a translation of 「返却口」
On the sign itself, the word box or slot is not needed. If it is a separate box I would say "I put the video into the (video) return box". If it is built into the wall I would say "I put the video into the return slot".
